I’m beyond words that such a fine school may vanish. What an incredible place….I look forward to hearing how the “fight” to save the school is progressing.

    John ( Class of ‘86)

  2. Dennis A. Deschamps Says:

I attended Daniel Murphy High School during the academic school year from 1984-1985 after graduating from Notre Dame Academy. I am saddened to see that the school will be closing after having attended the school. It irks me that eventhough that Cardinal Roger Mahony promised not to close schools such as Daniel Murphy to pay for the abuse lawsuit settlement, it still may happen. I do not wish this upon any other Catholic elementary and high school to go through what Daniel Murphy is going through. A good Catholic education today is essential & I do not feel that the students should suffer as a result of this.

  3. Luis Says:

After reading the comments, I think the current principal should be fired and replace with someone who knows how to recruit. DMHS use to be such a power house when it came to academics and sports.

    Luis (Class of 96)

  4. savedmhs Says:

Luis (Class of 96′) It is not the Fault of the current Principal, but former Dennis Munoz (now St. Bernard’s Principal) What he did was place the school in such a low enrollment by not letting others help recruit, then he was moved to St. Bernard’s HS and this is where the Archdiocses has asked us to go at first. He also took the Financial Department with him. It’s like he knew this was happening.
Ms. Dandorf was given the Role of Principal with the hopes of this was going to be a new change for DMHS, however she was devestated to learn it would be closing.

  5. George Sayeg Says:

What a tragic loss, not only for the current students and faculty but for the entire community that has supported it for the past 50 years. I’ll always remember my days at St John Vianney/Daniel Murphy H.S. Class of 1960. It’s wonderful school spirt, competitive teams and the first ever boxing competition. Father Cavali was truly an inspiration and wonderful roll model for young men. He made us live by the Nobel Motto “The Nobel Man Plans Nobel Deeds, and by Nobel Deeds he stands.

I wish I could have been there tonight for what may be the last Nobel Game.

  6. John Grinstead Says:

Murphy was a very special place when I was there (79-83). Our demographic was incomprehensibly diverse. Only as an adult have I come to understand what countries my classmates must have come from and the languages they spoke. We were always the underfunded underdog after the Dominicans left and the archdiocese took over. Those of us who went through the transition understood that the stature of the place as a serious place to get educated was crumbling as they replaced dedicated, sophisticated teachers from the order with whoever they could find. Sr. St. George did a great job with what there was, but there wasn’t much. It shouldn’t end like this.

  7. NELSON C/O 96 Says:

It’s a sad day for hundreds of DMHS alumns to see the spouts of it’s precious fountain of education dry. The archdiocese needs to be reluctant in allowing the evil deeds of others bring demise to the few outlets of Catholic education we have available as a Catholic community. What will go next after our fine Catholic schools? Will it be our churches and sanctuaries? Where are we headed as Catholics in city that is filled temptation and lacking in the grace of Jesus Christ…

  8. Joseph Roth Says:

I graduated in 1971. The fine education I had prepared me for college and life in general. I went to school with blacks, whites, hispanics, filipinos, asians. I had excellent basketball coaches and was privaledged to be on championship teams. Our school only had 500 kids, yet the talent percapita was amazing. Top scholars and top athletes in a school that most
people nver heard of. I use to hitchhike on 3rd and La Brea.
I have many memories of a strict Catholic education. Father Cavalli walked around and gave swats to those who needed discipline. We had good quality students with a sense of what was truly right and wrong.
Shame on the Catholic hierarchy that allowed homosexual deviants to use their titles of “father” to prey on innocent kids. Moving them around instead of throwing them out. Homosexual and straight deviants alike
preyed on this kids for years until something had to give.
Unfortunately its the nw generation of kids of Daniel Murphy that need a
place of dignity in this messed culture to attend school. They are the ones that are now the new victims. This could have all been avoided if the Catholic hierarchy would have done the right thing and stopped the devients when they had a chance. I pray that God will forgive us all for we are all sinners. I pray his wil be done if He wants Daniel Murphy to be saved from closure. Thanks for allowing me to voice my dissolusionment with so-called leaders.

  9. Mark C. Phillips Says:

I don’t shock easily but the news of Daniel Murphy’s closing is a tremendous shock because it serves no good reason. I worked hard and studied hard while at DMHS, and in exchange I earned a terrific education that has served me well since graduation in 1976. I cannot imagine having attended another high school. I was one of those guys who took two public transit buses each way every morning and afternoon, but it was worth it. If I’ve learned one lesson from this shameful decision by the Archdiocese, it’s that the almight dollar is elevated onto a higher altar than Almighty God in some circles downtown. I do not support the Cardinal on this decision. No wonder so many church pews are empty these days. . . . we’re voting with our feet in protest over human policies that serve to scandalize (or should scandalize) us all. Shame on you, Your Eminence.

  10. Bob Baker Says:

I graduated in 1961 and my brother Larry graduated in 1963. It is a shame to see such a great High School close.
My education at St. John Vianney/DM provided the foundation for my career in engineering. I earned a BS Engineering from UCLA in 1966 and a MS in 1976.
When the Archdiocese decides to close schools like Daniel Murphy, it is discarding the future! If it doen’t prepare and educate the next generation then where are its priorities?

  11. Anthony Aguirre Says:

Sad day for all who went, but the school could have done a lot more by communicating with the alumni. The website was a JOKE!!! the alumni section was never completed, at least a few years checking up on it.

    Class of 89

  12. LEW ERHART Says:

    HEY GUYS;

WELL A GREAT CHAPTER MAY CLOSE FOREVER. We at least can keep the memories. Father Cavalli razor strap and rosary coming at you with a smile. Father Lopez fudging the rules to win a 3 on 3 in the gym. Brother Francis showing how Broadway dancing is really done. Father Simonez tossing his butts out the window then making us pick them up at detention. Coach Fitzgerald telling us that “God rests on Sundays we practice”. Pagone trying to see the field over the players. Many fine memories and men were molded here. We won our share and lost as many it is sad to lose this one. All we can do is pass on the lessons learned and memories cherished. God bless. Lew Erhart 69

  13. DMHS Alumni Association Says:

This message is directed at Anthony Aguirre from Class of 1989.

    Anthony,

If you read the savedmhs.org website, you’ll learn that Denis Muniz (the former principal) DELETED the alumni database. Yes, I said DELETED. He also instructed the web developer to REMOVE all access to the database from the school’s website. It was done on purpose. It was no accident. Any anger or animosity you’re feeling about the alumni database should be directed toward Denis Munoz. You can reach him at St. Bernard High School. He’s over there now preparing that school for closure.

By the way, Anthony, on 6/20/08 you visited the savedmhs.org site and filled out the form to update your contact information. However, you neglected to include your mailing address. If you want to be kept up to date, you might want to provide your full contact information. Our crystal ball is not always working.

  14. Lance Agdigos Says:

I can’t believe my alma mater closed down. I am a member of the class of 1991. Murphy was a very memorable place for me and i will never forget the friends i made and the memories shared. The teachers and faculty were great and our school tradition was rich. Murphy was home. I can’t believe that such a permanent fixture in L.A. can be shut down. I hope that some day our school will reopen. To my fellow nobles, never forget the values we learned and our heritage, I will always be proud to be a Murphy Noble.

  15. dorkoman Says:

    murphy was iight

  16. Ivan (Yader) c/o 94 Says:

The school never had a chance, since the early 90’s the school has lost a lot of money. The Dean of student at the time I attended this school inform me that in 1994 the school was in the hole $1.4 million for that fiscal year. In the late Eighties the school started to have a reputation for sending your trouble teen boys who were no longer admited to the L.A. Unified School District. Thats how my chapter at Daniel Murphy Started, the LAUSD was finally tired of my antics, they advice my parents that It would be wise to invest the extra money to send me to a private institution, where the classroom were’nt over crowded and the proffesor had more time to deal with me. So dont’t cry for Daniel Murphy its fate was sealed long before the Bishop announce the school closure.
