  2. David Thomas Says:

    Hola
We all are part of the Daniel community in some way. The Archdiocese has made some terrible mistakes in the past on how they handled the Priest child abuse scandal. The sad part is that it appears they are continuing with the same trend, hurting todays and future children to cover mistakes of the past. I often tell my kids, that you should not just listen to people’s words; but also, look more attentively at their actions.
The Cardinal, repeatedly stated how protecting the children from harm was one of his top priorities; but his actions differ. How many fundraisers has the cardinal attended to gather funding to build the new Cathedral? Now compare that to the effort to Cardinal has put into trying to keep Daniel Murphy from closing. What I find shocking is that I do not recall hearing any attempts from the Archdiocese reaching out to our community, seeking solutions to keep Daniel Murphy High School open.
If we all choose to stand together on this issue, we can prevent a terrible injustice from occurring.
    God Bless,

  3. Teresa Says:

I agree to what David Thomas said 100%.
I want to add that I know the “Together in Mission” campaig is done every January in every single Catholica Church in Los Angeles region. It raises millions and millions of dollars.
The purpose of this campaing is ” to help parishes and parrochial schools that are in danger of closing due to financial hardship”
??? Why this campaign (a small portion) is used for Daniel Murphy if the financial burden is the real cause for the closure decision?

  4. dmchs student Says:

i appreciate the effort that people are putting into keeping the school open but, many students are leaving at the end of the semester, and still even if the school does remain open, how long will if be before the school faces this problem again. parents are going 2 be subjective to putting there kids in a school that mite close before they graduate. not to mention that the school is out dated. sports are not a success, and the reputation of the school is not as great as it use 2 be. if the school is 2 remain open its going to need upgrades and who is gonna pay for that? Even though i love this school im going to have to leave at the end of the semester wit others who are leaving, i have to look out for my future, sports wise and academically

  5. Jason Alexander Says:

I attended this high school many years ago and all I have to say it is about time. When I attended, the Dominicans were running the school. They were not the best administrators for this school. The school at one time had a successful basketball program, but was fleeting. The football program was a joke. The track and field program was mildly successful, but all of the other programs were subpar. Looking back several years since I graduated from this school does not leave fond memories. I would not waste my time marching to keep this school open. Let it die the merciful death this school should have had years ago.

  6. Former NDA student Says:

This message is directed to Jason Alexander. Jason, you’re a poor excuse for a NOBLE. Maybe “no balls” should have been your moto….A disloyal, ungrateful class act person like you should have not been privileged with the honor of attending a parochial high school. Instead of complaining about the schools “sub par” extra curricular activities I would have expected someone with some education and probable success to have made a difference and donated time or money to that effort. Maybe you should have gone down the street to LA High School.

Please contact me for rally attendance. I know a number of people interested in this cause!

  7. Real Noble Says:

Dear “dmchs student” – a.k.a., Todd Tamberg, Archdiocese Spokesman –

Nice try try Todd. This slop-for-writing can’t pass as a Murphy student’s prose. And none of us EVER referred to us ourselves as a “dmchs” student. We we’ve always been Murphy students.

This is an attempt to dishearten an insulted student body, as well as the parent association. The fact is, the Archdiocese is WRONG and frankly not looking out for the best interests of its students. Unfortunately, it has a history of ignoring youth. And now, they’re paying for it, or should I say that Murphy is paying for it. (Interesting, Todd, that a Murphy student was among the last to bring forward a sexual abuse suit and now the school is closing!)

What’s most upsetting is the eviction of the nuns who live at our school. Cardinal Mahony should be ashamed of this decision. While he lives in his new elaborate digs downtown and maintains a personal driver, these wonderful women who dedicated their lives are being kicked out. It’s disgraceful.

Todd – the real issue is not the condition of the school, but the Archdiocese’s treatment of its young people and retired nuns. There’s no way to spin that into anything acceptable.

  8. JMinton Says:

    Hello everyone,

No matter how many students leave the school, no matter how often we get a “no” from the Archdiocese, no matter what happens, I will not stop the fight until I feel it is over. That probably won’t be until June. I’m a realist and have some alternatives ready. But it boggles my mind that people can sit back and watch this happen, students included. Stand up and fight for something. If we don’t, we are letting Mahony and the Archdiocese know that they can do this over and over again, just like the abuse victims. To the student who wrote that he is leaving – if you are going to a Catholic school, how do you know it won’t happen there in a year or two? And you should know that many people might read this, not just teenagers who use textspeak. And remember, if you don’t have anything good to say….

    Julie Minton

  9. Dennis A. Deschamps Says:

I attended Daniel Murphy High School during the academic school year from 1984-1985 after graduating from Notre Dame Academy. I am saddened to see that the school will be closing after having attended the school. It irks me that eventhough that Cardinal Roger Mahony promised not to close schools such as Daniel Murphy to pay for the abuse lawsuit settlement, it still may happen. I do not wish this upon any other Catholic elementary and high school to go through what Daniel Murphy is going through. A good Catholic education today is essential & I do not feel that the students should suffer as a result of this.

  10. Locksley Says:

While all the anger expressed is understandable, I suggest more constructive methods be employed.

Has anyone contacted City Councilman Bernard Parks?

Has anyone contacted the Dan Murphy Foundation? The late Papal Countess Bernadine Murphy Donahue made the original $2,000,000 donation that built the present facility in 1965-66 as Daniel Murphy Memorial High School. She and her husband, the late Papal Knight Sir Daniel Donohue, established the foundation to manage their funds. It seems odd that the Dan Murphy Foundation has not taken a more active interest in the school also bearing the name of the father of its founder – unless, of course they are under orders from the Cardinal not to.

Always remember the political savvy of the archdiocesan ordinary, you cannot discount it. Politics are rife within the Archdiocesan Catholic Center – known as the chancery office in any other diocese.

The Dan Murphy Foundation made a reported $29,000,000 donation – the first such gift it might be noted – to the new cathedral with the stipulation, as the Cardinal asserted, that it be used for nothing except a NEW cathedral. Since he recognizes such stipulations, perhaps the Dan Murphy Foundation can stipulate that the money being donated the Archdiocese be used solely to save the high school and for no other purpose.

The Dan Murphy Foundation is located at
    800 W 6th St Ste 1240, Los Angeles, CA 90017-2715

    Phone: (213) 623-3120
    SIC:Education, Religious, and Charitable Trusts
Line of Business:Nonprofit Trust Management. Information about the Foundation can be found here:
    http://www.manta.com/coms2/dnbcompany_hh7c0w

Other hefty donors to the cathedral can be found at this site:
    http://www.bishop-accountability.org/ca-la/mahony-2001-12.htm

It would be a wonderful irony if any of the donors to the Fortress on Temple can be found to save Daniel Murphy High School. If the Red One wanted to save Vianney-Murphy he would, of course, have found them himself.

The mismanagement of the school some years ago that managed to lose students and place it in a precarious financial position – considering all the parents who are doing their best to find alternative get out of the shoddily-run Los Angeles Unified School District – should also be reported to His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI.

I further recommend that the Thomas More Law Center be notified for assistance in preventing this sale.
    http://www.thomasmore.org/default-sb_thomasmore.html?134963937

Daniel Murphy High School is not a ‘non-essential’ archdiocesan property.
Legal efforts must be taken to delay this action until after the Cardinal must submit his resignation under Canon Law on his 75th birthday, February 11, 2011.

Look folks, nothing is going to happen unless canonical or legal means are obtained to stop this immoral action.

I wish I could do more to help but this is about the extent of it. I hope my suggestions bear fruit.

And it wouldn’t hurt for any of us to pray to God through the intercession of St John Vianney in this matter.

  11. Greg L. Says:

Locksley: Thank you for your post. Many of my answers in response to your suggestions will be “yes” and have beared little, if any, fruit, as yet. This is not to be critical of your suggestions, just the facts of what has occurred. Yes – contact has been made with prominent civic leaders. Their support is not out of the question, especially in concert with additional parties.
I have contacted the Daniel Murphy Foundation – and the administrative assistant did everything she could to stonewall me – making it very clear the return call – if it were made at all – would be on their timetable – not ours. As of yet, no call has been returned. We would certainly welcome such a stipulation as you indicated and would publicly recognize their effort if it were forthcoming. This public appreciation would apply to any other donors, as you suggest. There is no doubt in my mind – if there was a true, sincere desire to save the school, by any party – the school would be saved.
Thank you for the reference to additional Cathedral contributors. Yes, there is no doubt the Cardinal could save the school if he wanted, save for one Higher authority.
The mismanagement to which you refer was by a principal instituted by the Archdiocese whose intent, we believe, was to weaken the school to its current state, meaning to say the “mismanagement” to which you referred is believed to be intentional, and to place the school in a position for closure. The mismanagement has been reported. Attributes associated with the Thomas More Law Center will be evaluated. We, especially alumni, agree that DMHS is not a “non-essential” archdiocesan property. We believe it to be an institution which serves its original purpose – the last remaining Catholic institution in the area which provides a top quality college prep education for a reasonable price. Parents are even willing to pay MORE to keep the school open. That’s how much they believe in the school. Furthermore, is the tradition, comraderie and lifelong relationships that have emanated from the school.
    Thank you for your contact.

  12. Greg L. Says:

    Any other comments welcome.

  13. Locksley Says:

Another thought that comes to me is to try the Hope family, as in Bob Hope. His son, Kelly, from the class of 65 is an alumnus. He may be able to put together some donors – or get more media coverage.

Classmates, that online service, has many Vianney-Murphy alumni members.

And start stirring up the media with press releases. Quotes like “I am ashamed of Daniel Murphy” by the Cardinal are dynamite. Talk to the KFI newsroom – Christ Little is the news director. The workers in the archdiocesan offices hate that station but can’t help but listen. It is heard all over the chancery office.

See if you can get John and Ken more involved – they are shallow and unclever but they have big mouths.

You have to keep calling Councilman Parks. He has lots of influence. But you must always remember that Mahony is, first and foremost, a politician. If you don’t realize that you will never beat him at his own game. He knows were too many bodies are buried. The city administration is scared of him.

You will get nowhere with Mayor Villaraigosa. He’s under Mahony’s thumb. Villaraigosa, like the Kennedys, only remembers he is Catholic when it is politically advantageous. The mayor had little real power so you want to tarket the City Council.

And see if Bill Bammattre can be of any influence, at least to send a letter of support. The same from Bernie Parks and even from that waste of time mayor we have. The more paper you have from these people the more credible you become when you approach the Press.

It would also help to get interviews on the morning talk programs. This is the kind of David vs Goliath fight they like, and remember that Mahony has two strikes against him.

Even though, among the first things Mahony did when he came to this town was to fire the Latino gravediggers for the archdiocese when they went on strike, the Latino memory is short. Still, one should maybe send out press releases to the Hispanic stations, radio and TV reminding them that Mahony cares about them only if it makes him look good.

Play up the Mahony is ashamed of the school. Whittle your set pieces down to sound bites. Make sure that the Munoz angle is worked on – why did he run down the school when so many parents are CRYING to find venues outside of the LAUSD?

Mahony’s plan – to send kids living in Hollywood and Windsor Square and Fairfax St Bernards in Playa del Rey – where Munoz is again practicing his black magic – demonstrates how hard hearted The Cardinal-Archbishop actually is. Paint the Red One in the deepest shades of midnight. Scrooge should look like an archangel next to him.

The archdiocese is a very closed and somewhat incestuous place … people just keep getting shuttled around transferred from one place to another no matter how poor their achievements.

Get the Thomas More Law Center involved by all means.

And continue to invoke the aid of St John Vianney, besieging heaven with prayer.

  14. Immaculate Heart graduate Says:

It’s unfortunate how one man who victimized several students is also victimizing a whole student body. I am so disappointed in Cardinal Mahoney and the Archdiocese for putting financial matters ahead of students.

  15. Greg L. Says:

I propose that if Cardinal Mahony wants the school down so badly….that we go out and buy him a pick ax and shovel….and say “Well, go to it….” We’ll see how quickly he’d want to remove the building that way.
    A Murphy graduate

  16. phareplay Says:

I started attending Daniel Murphy in 1965. The previous name of St John Vianney High School was just being changed …..
An impressive old style building was being still in use , but would soon be replaced by the current structure ….. Thereafter, the old venerable building was demolished ….
Dominican brothers and priests, like Father Cavalli, Father Simonez (raled against the Jews outside in the neighborhood for killing Jesus, then would die the following year) Brother Mark held sway ….

Dick Powell, junior would not be quiet.

“Personal sins” were preventing many from taking holy communion, and Father Cavalli DEMANDED to know why? ……. Silence ……

Swattings were the order of the day. Father Cavalli who swat both the innocent and the guilty. I got swatted for things done the previous day when I was absent ….

We had to wear ties …..

Beware of Mahoney “shills” on this forum avocating the closure of the “venerable old school” …..

  17. Respondent Says:

So are you a mahoney shill, phareplay?

  18. LEW ERHART Says:

Gee you sound bitter. Your were in class with me and must remember that Cavalli farmed out the swats to the lettermens club. He would just count. The fact that you don’t have the courage to reveal your identity speaks for itself. by the way my record was 86 swats in 70 until the late great Bobby Henderson broke it with 212 in 71. I found Simonez in the yard after practice. What i remember is the fact the he also taught Islam, Judism, Confucianism, Hindu, which public school teaches any religion now? What would you expect in a catholic school? DUH!!! Go to a madrassa and ask about the jews. Cavalli tested me once. trying to make me tell him who helped me lock Montalbano in the closet with the piano in Bertonis geometry class. Beat me until he knew i wouldn’t talk. I got detention every sat washing school bus till school ended. Some people grow some whine. go Nobles Lew Erhart 69

  19. Greg L. Says:

Erhart: What’s your point about the Madrassa?

  20. LEW ERHART Says:

Intolerance!!! What do you think their answer would be in regards to history of the Jewish faith. I am of the opinion that you would be tossed for even asking. As for the red bird getting his hands dirty. I think not. From what i have read he didn’t have to courage to meet and discuss any options to closing the school. Losing this school is a loss for the church. But the church has been losing touch in the US for a long time. Like the public schools to much “administration” not enough teaching, Our church has lost sight of what made it the institution it was. Bringing families up in the faith!!

I still have some elevator tickets for sale, any takers.
    lew

  21. Greg L. Says:

Finally, clarification. And what about the “history” of the Jewish faith do YOU think or know is most troublesome to them? You know what you can do with your opinion.

  22. LEW ERHART Says:

I know i have the courage of my convictions to publish my full name. Also I have learned to listen to other opinions and judge them for my self and try to lead a reasoned tranquil life. Because for too long I used to just dismiss opposing opinions and views with arrogant disdain. I have grown a little over the years. Having said that the one thing I don’t accept is threats veiled or direct. So go with God if you ever get to Alaska look me up. Lewis m. Erhart/ Anchorage,Ak
